This website was created to provide coin collectors with a basic online resource and reference for the Shield Nickel. This was the first five cent piece struck using nickel within the composition. Its predecessor was the half dime, which was struck primarily in silver. The series was relatively short and paved the way for the following Liberty Nickel.
